Individual Counselling
Individual counselling is a process where I work with you one-on-one – in a safe, caring and confidential environment. We work together to explore your feelings, and your beliefs or behaviours. And we work through challenging or influential thoughts/memories that impact your daily life.
We’ll also identify aspects of your life that you would like to change, and work to better understand yourself and others. One way you can achieve this is to set personal goals. I can then assist you to bring about those changes in your life.
How Counselling helps
Counselling is a way to assist you to cope with major life challenges or childhood trauma, to deal with depression and anxiety, or simply for personal growth and greater self-knowledge and awareness.
SESSIONS
Our work together may only require four or five sessions or it could mean several months. It all depends on your unique needs and personal goals for the therapy.
We’ll never tell you what to do
Counselling and our time together will help you make decisions - but a counsellor will never tell you what to do.
If this is what you’re seeking, you’ll need to look for some other type of help, such as advice agencies, telephone helplines, support or self-help groups.
How I work
Our time together is whole heartedly about you. My approach is professional, warming, non-judgemental and open. I use a person-centred approach, which means you are at the centre of our work.
Everything we discuss is completely confidential. I understand that sharing your story can take courage and often trigger feelings you may not have experienced before. So, if at any stage you feel uneasy or uncomfortable, we’ll stop the session and take the time you need, at your pace.
What to expect from counselling
Seeing a counsellor is about seeking professional help from a qualified practitioner who can help to normalise and validate your experience and place it into context. They’ll be
objective and experienced in dealing with a variety of problems. This often leads to you seeing a problem in a new way and feeling more able to cope with it.
First session
Your counselling starts with a single session that lasts for an hour. We’ll work together to make sense of your experience, conceptualise your problems in new ways and think about how you might move forward.
If some problems are of a more complex nature and/or long standing, further sessions may be appropriate. But the aim will be to always keep your counselling as efficient and focused as possible.
It’s common to have counselling sessions in consecutive weeks. However, you may find that it’s useful to space your sessions more widely to enable you to process and test out the new ways of thinking and practice.
I look forward to working with you to support you through challenging times.
